Jessica and Franklin engagements

When I met Jessica and Franklin last August when they booked, I knew they were a good match for me. They suggested doing a vintage engagement shoot in the winter. So here we are! We brought along some vintage suitcases since they love to travel. We found a ton of amazing spots in downtown Milwaukee, a fabulous old hotel, and (since they were engaged in Venice,) some wonderful Italian architecture. The temperature quickly dropped a lot, but these two braved it well and ended up being amazing models for us!

I just recently wrapped up all the designs for the 2009 wedding season. It feels so great to be all caught up but I'm seriously missing all the cool bride and grooms I worked with in 2009. A lot of you have your albums by now and I'm so happy you have been enjoying them.

I thought I would post some favorites from some of the weddings I shot. You'll notice that the designs are very simple and timeless. This allows your photographs to take center stage in your album.

Alexis and Paul

I love this spread from Missy and Mike's engagement session. Such a cool series of photos.

I try to make clean designs by not using a whole lot of images on one spread. Several images on one spread can be a little distracting and wont make as much of an impact as just a 2 or 3 would. Sometimes I break this rule if the images make a cool series like these two below. Since the photos match, the design is very pleasing to the eye. Spreads like this quickly become a favorite of mine to incorporate in a wedding album.

New year

Please excuse my lack of blogging lately. We are still trying to settle into our new house. I never knew that deciding on a paint color was so difficult! I'm excited to get it all finished and show off my new office. I'll be posting photos of that when it's done!

Winter time isn't a busy time for wedding photographers. So lately I've had time to get ready for the new wedding season with some new stuff and some changes will go into effect soon. I'm excited for them, especially this one.

I always had a desire to shoot film. I finally got the guts to actually purchase a film body and I'm already having a blast with it. I love taking my time, making sure my exposure is just right and manually focusing. It sorta forces me to make sure every shot I take is golden and I love that.

I'll be using my film camera a lot this year. I will still be primarily using my digital but I'm definitely wanting to someday use film exclusively. Yup, exclusively!

Labor Day weekend on Super 8

My whole family got together for Labor Day last September. The typical Labor Day for my family includes corn on the cob, sitting and relaxing, fishing, and my dad playing and singing on his guitar. I brought out my husbands Super 8 mm camera. This is my first film and I have to say I think I did good for my first time! I hope to shoot more with this fun camera.

Watching the video makes me miss summer so much!

Amanda and Greg wedding

Church ceremony in Sauk City, Wisconsin. Reception at the Marriott in Middleton.

I love capturing the brides face when she's slipping into her wedding dress.

While the girls were getting ready I took some shots of the boys outside. It was cold! The boys were awesome at hiding how cold they felt.

One of my favorites! I love capturing the groom's reaction to seeing his bride for the first time. Priceless.

This church was so beautiful. Perfect light.

Near midnight even the staff at the Marriott were joining in on the fun!

I spent some time with Sam and Dan on a beautiful winter afternoon in Sheboygan last week. I love the location they chose for their engagement shoot. You don't often see beachy photos taken in the winter! They both love to bird watch so we had to get a few shots with their binoculars. Oh I just love those! I love it when couples bring a little prop to their shoot that is meaningful to them. Sam and Dan were just adorable together. Their wedding in May is one I'm definitely looking forward to!

I could not wait to shoot Missy and Mike's wedding at the Manti Temple in Manti, Utah a couple weekends ago. When I lived in Utah I had always wanted to shoot at the Manti Temple. I mean, look at how gorgeous that thing is! So I was thrilled when Missy and Mike wanted me to shoot their special day.

It could have been a little warmer but the weather was perfect. Not too windy and just enough sunlight to make the photos extra pretty. Missy and Mike even slipped and fell right on their bellies in the snow at one point. You wont be able to tell that that happened from looking at the photos. Unfortunately, I didn't get a shot of that as I was in horror watching the whole thing :) I like that my clients don't hate me for making them walk in snow for some pretty photos!

What I loved about this wedding:

Missy's dress- I was floored when I first saw Missy in her dress during her bridal shoot in October. Total eye candy of a dress! The jacket is the icing on the cake. Absolutely stunning.

Mike's Tux- Best tux I've seen, ever! The color looked so perfect next the snow outside.

Missy's bouquet-Hello, it had pine cones in it!

The frost on the tree branches while I was taking pictures outside of the temple during their sealing.

The bridesmaids tights!

All of their family and friends who were so welcoming and gracious.

Moving

Hubby and I found a house and we will be moving in next week! Things are going to slow down a bit due to the move, so clients your patience is appreciated with email responses, photo uploads, etc. The blog will be a little neglected for awhile while we get moved and settled in.

Baby Rowan

My nephew Rowan needed some baby pictures now that he is a little older. I love it when babies are in the 6-8 month range. They laugh at everything and anything. So adorable! My parents bedroom has the most perfect light for pictures so we did his shoot in there.

Hubby and I flew out to Utah last weekend to shoot Missy and Mike's engagements. I loved coming back to Utah for a short visit and enjoyed the nicer weather. We came at the perfect time because the leaves were stunning!

It was so nice getting to know Missy and Mike during their engagement session. They were a little nervous about getting their pictures taken but acted so natural and happy in front of me. I loved hearing about their wedding too. I cannot wait to see their ideas come to life. It sounds really magical! They will be getting married at the Manti Temple in December. I had always wanted to shoot a wedding at the Manti Temple but never had the chance to when I lived in Utah.

We did Missy's bridal session the next day and I cannot WAIT to show you those pictures. They will have to wait until after the wedding(so a certain someone doesn't peek!).

Kimberley and Todd wedding

If I could think of one word for Kimberley and Todd's wedding it would be glamorous. Everything was glamorous. They exchanged vows and had their reception at the Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells. I was swooning when I saw the room where they had their ceremony. And the reception! Total eye candy throughout the room. They pulled off a fabulous wedding and I very much enjoyed photographing it.

Thank you so much to Kimberley and Todd for allowing me to be a part of your wedding. You guys are awesome!

Kimberley and her dad rode on a horse-drawn carrigage to the ceremony. So Cinderella!

They had someone paint the scene during the ceremony. Here the guy is painting the room before the ceremony. He added in the people during it. What a neat idea!

Maren was married in June and we are now doing her bridals. I'm so glad we waited until the fall to do them. Porterfield up north is stunning this time of year. I was excited to shoot at her parents cottage again(you can see their engagements at the cottage here).

Maren is not only ridiculously photogenic and beautiful but also handled the cold weather extremely well. It was fun working with you, Maren! I hope to work with you and Brian again in the future ;)

Okay, I KNOW I should be smacked over the head for making fall pictures colorless but trust me the next three just work better that way :)

Kelley and Dean wedding

Kelley and Dean had their ceremony and reception at Badger Farms near Madison. Badger Farms is definitely the perfect place to have a rustic themed wedding! Their ceremony had to be moved indoors due to the weather(boo! Second wedding in a row that that's happened!) BUT I love how dreamy they made the room look with the lights. So pretty! I loved the bouquets and boutonnieres they made from the flowers they bought that morning at the farmers market.

Sara, Nick & Daisy

Sara and Nick wanted some family photos done with their adorable little Golden Retriever, Daisy. I wanted to take her home with me, she was so cute! I love it when families and couples bring their pet with them on photo shoots.

We found some great places in the Third Ward and Lake Park in Milwaukee. The days are definitely getting shorter now and it got dark so fast but we got tons of great shots in the amount of time we had.

Rebecca and Erhan had their ceremony at Villa Terrace in Milwaukee. The Villa Terrace might be one of my new favorite venues! The place is right out of Italy! We were able to get a few shots of the bride and groom outside before the guests started coming in for the outdoor ceremony. Then, the rain hit. Everything had to be moved indoors. The room they had their ceremony in wasn't your typical backup. It was a gorgeous room with beautiful paintings on the walls. Loved it!

Don't Shout Films

My husband Jonathan has started filming families and weddings with a Super 8 film movie camera and absolutely loves it! I totally wish we had something like this for our wedding. We've already used it for some family stuff. The hard part is waiting for the film to come back but it's also half the fun!

Jonathan came along to Monica and Nick's wedding back in July and filmed all the highlights of the wedding. I love how it turned out and just adore the vintage look to it. I think the music chosen for it is a funky contrast to the oldness of the film itself. Love!

Alexis and Paul wedding

Ceremony and reception at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art.

We first started the day with the guys.

Then off to get pictures of Alexis getting ready.

Paul got Alexis the most thoughtful gift. He bought Alexis a pair of shoes(that she had wanted for awhile) and had someone put in diamonds on the soles(Paul Simon's song "Diamonds on the soles of her shoes" is a song Alexis and Paul really like).

First wedding I've done with bridesmen. Hope it's not the last!

Loved the food they had for their guests. Some of the best I've ever had at a wedding! Catered by Fresco.

I had been looking forward to Andrea and Brandon's wedding day for months and months! Not only because Andrea and Brandon are so genuine and nice but because I'd get to see so many people that I haven't seen since I was a little kid. A lot of my childhood memories involved these people and it was kinda weird(in a good way!) to see everyone all grown up. And since Andrea's parents are friends with mine, my parents got to see me in action on a job(that's a first!).

This blog post is for Andrea and Brandon's friends and family. A lot of these photos only make sense if you were actually there.

I just love these two love birds. Megan and Gavin were married at the Overture Center in Madison. Their ceremony was something very special. Only immediate family attended(total of 5 guests). Gavin and Megan wrote their own vows to each other. Gavin's vows were definitely unique with one of them being "I promise that you will be my BFF". It was such a laid-back, "anything goes" kind of ceremony. I just love how different it all was and it was an honor to witness.

I adored all the buttons they put on all the tables for the reception. And the mustache's for the photo booth were a hit!

Oh how I adored this wedding. Ceremony and reception took place at the War Memorial in Milwaukee. It was forecast to rain the whole day but not even a single drop was felt. Monica and Nick's ceremony was so beautiful even though it was windy. I had so much fun shooting this wedding. Monica and Nick are SO perfect for each other. I love La Crosse! Such a beautiful part of the state. I would VERY much like to shoot there again :) Kelly and Matt's wedding was surprisingly cold(63 degrees) for a July wedding. Despite the slight chill the wedding was steller. SO many beautiful details to photograph. The ceremony was held in this cute little church out in the middle of nowhere and the reception was held at Kelly's parents house. Red barnes, horses, a tire swing and beautiful views made for a perfect place for all the fun stuff to happen. I was only there up until the end of the toasts, but I can only imagine that it was a really cool site to see at night.

I so loved this dog.

Kelly is drop dead gorgeous! Had to include a few of just her.

The trampoline was not only good for the kids but the adults too!

I was really looking forward to Maren and Brian's wedding day. After shooting their engagements a couple weeks ago, I knew my job was going to be an easy one. Not just because they are both beautiful people but they are also the nicest people to work with.

Saturday's forecast said rain all day but it only misted a little during portraits at the Capitol and completely stopped by the time we took more pictures at the Arboretum. What a relief!

I absolutely loved Maren and Brian's first dance later at the reception. It was so romantic and very well done. Bravo to you two :) Maren surprised Brian by getting a 10-piece version of the UW band to come in and play "5th quarter". The majority of people at the reception are UW alum and everyone went crazy! Such a fun time!

My nephew needed some 2 year old portraits done last week. Even though he didn't have a nap that day he was the perfect subject. Such a sweet little boy. He is a big fan of the Milwaukee Brewers, likes to say "spaghettios" & "goose poop", and adores his little brother Rowan.

Heather and Rohin Wedding

Heather and Rohin had their ceremony and reception at the American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin. What a beautiful place! The forecast for their wedding was scattered rain. It was down pouring right before the ceremony was supposed to start. Heather was determined to have her ceremony outside as planned and thankfully good luck was on her side. The rain had stopped minutes before the ceremony. I thought it was so romantic having the ceremony outside right after a rain storm.

It was a pleasure working with Heather and Rohin and their family and friends. Have fun in India for the Hindu ceremony!

Me and the hubby traveled all the way to Porterfield, Wisconsin for Maren and Brian's engagements. I was so excited to arrive at Maren's parents cottage after hearing about how beautiful it is. I love little places like this that are tucked away in little towns. The warm afternoon sun gave us plenty of yummy light to work with as well. It couldn't have been better! The cottage has been in Maren's family for many generations and Maren and Brian were really wanting their engagements taken there since it's such a special place to them.

Maren and Brian are getting married in less than 2 weeks! Can't wait for the wedding!

Andrea and I go way back. We knew each other when we were little kids at our weekend campground. It's too bad I don't have a picture of us when were were young there because I would totally post it! Now we're all grown up and she is getting married to the nicest guy, Brandon. We had lots of fun walking all over the Madison campus and down State Street, which is where they spend a lot of their time together. I could have spent another hour or so taking pictures. There is so much character in Madison, I love it! Andrea and Brandon are one of the most genuinely kind people and I'm so happy to be photographing their wedding in August!

Jeanette and Jesse

I flew to Salt Lake City for Jesse and Jeanette's wedding on Thursday. It was a little strange being back in Utah. It sorta felt like I went on a very long vacation somewhere and came back. Me and Jonathan had a great time staying in downtown Salt Lake enjoying walking everywhere instead of renting a car. We had a lovely dinner at Melting Pot and then took wedding pictures for a good friend the next day. Couldn't get better than that!

Jeanette and Jesse had their sealing in the afternoon and then had a wedding dinner at the Joseph Smith Memorial building later. We had lots of fun taking their portraits around the Temple. These two are so ridiculously photogenic. My job was a sinch! They are such a happy couple and even had good spirits despite the fact that their honeymoon had to be re-routed from Mexico to a cruise on the pacific northwest due to the swine flu.

Congratulations! Can't wait to see you guys again! :)

Out of town

I can't believe I'm saying I'll be out of town when I'll be in Salt Lake! So weird! I'll be gone from Wednesday May 6th through Friday May 8th. I'll be shooting this little lady's wedding on the 7th. Yesterdays wedding was my first wedding since moving back to Wisconsin. I have to say that it was the perfect wedding to start off my wedding season. Everything about Michael and Katherine's wedding was phenomenal and beautiful. So many great moments, so many great people and so many awesome pictures to post. I had to narrow them down for you and could only narrow down about 70 something pictures :)

Since I've been home I was able to meet my newest nephew, Rowan. You may remember his big brother Will from this blog post a couple years ago. Will is now a proud big brother and couldn't be more happy to have Rowan.

I brought my camera for a visit and had to get one shot.

Literally days before we left Utah we had our pictures taken by Dustin Izatt. He is one of my good photo friends and so fabulously talented at taking the most beautiful pictures. He let me tag along to some of his weddings when I was first starting out in wedding photography. He is one cool cat and super nice to everyone and is more than willing to help the photo newbies get a good start at their careers. Due to weather we had to schedule our shoot in the middle of the day which equals poor lighting. Despite the bad lighting Dustin was able to rock the shoot and we are thrilled with our pictures. This proves that a really good photographer can work in any lighting condition and give you wonderful results.

I had Valerie from Archetype Beauty do my hair and makeup for the pictures. Valerie is the SWEETEST person and it was wonderful to get to know her and talk with her while I was getting all glamed up. I loved how everything turned out and I felt so pretty! Thank you Valerie!

It was important to me to get a view of the city in a picture.

And the mountains of course!

My eyes are so dang sensitive to the sun and the lighting we were working with wasn't the greatest for eyes either. At some point Dustin suggested we take some pictures with my shades. I thought I would look like a bug with the kind of shades I wear but I think this picture turned out cute!

When we lived in Salt Lake we would take our dogs to an off leash trail at Memory Grove park. We always came across this rock that looked like a foot. Sometimes this rock would have toes and sometimes it wouldn't. I'm glad we have a picture of it!

Downtown Salt Lake. I wore this dress on our first anniversary and I was so happy to fit in it again! I remember trying it on a couple years ago and it wouldn't zip up.

Ha ha. No ride for you :) I'm not sure why I thought it was a good idea to ride a bicycle in a DRESS but oh well. I didn't feel like changing into my jeans again.

Heather and Rohin

I was so excited to do my first shoot after moving to Wisconsin! We met Heather and Rohin in Fond du Lac(my hometown) for their engagements. I'm so glad they decided to come down to Fond du Lac from Oshkosh for their shoot because we had lots of fun getting the know them. We found out that Rohin proposed to Heather at Central Park in New York City! How romantic! We hit some downtown area's and then went to Lakeside Park for some beautiful sun shiny photos. I'm so happy with how they turned out.

Heather and Rohin are tying the knot next month in Kohler and I cannot wait for the big day!

Anna, you made it to Wisconsin. What are you going to do next?

Sarah and Ross wedding

We made it to Wisconsin and we have just started to settle in. I have so much work to do but wanted to put Ross and Sarah's wedding on the blog quickly. I know Ross and Sarah have been waiting patiently to see some favorites :)

Sarah and Ross held their wedding and reception at The Victorian in Layton, Utah. The Victorian has so many beautiful details in the mansion. I could have spent another hour just taking shots of all the pretty things inside. The weather was sunny and gorgeous outside for their portraits. I loved the bright snowy mountains in the background of some of them. I miss the mountains already!

It was a pleasure working with Sarah and Ross on my last wedding in Utah!

I sat in my living room yesterday staring at all the boxes we have packed already. It is a royal mess in our apartment right now. I can't believe that a week from now we'll be gone.

I love that I'm going back to my home state but Utah has definitely grown on me. How could you not love the weather, the mountains, and the fact that Utah has the highest level of well-being in America? So many people I know say bad things about Utah and cannot wait to move out. I can understand their feelings. But I consider myself super duper lucky that I had a chance to live here for awhile...for so many reasons.

I am especially grateful to all of the Utah photographers. I don't think the brides here have a clue how lucky they are to have all of you to choose from. There are so many of you that are amazing. I don't think I'd be where I am today with my business without all the talent that surrounded me for years. It really pushed me to do better. I've had the privilege of meeting some of you and some I haven't met but still hope to someday. You all create beautiful art and so many of you have inspired me. Thank you.

I'd like to thank all my Utah clients(and any clients that had me travel from Utah to their wedding). I've learned so much from all of you and I want to thank you for trusting me to document your wedding. I've met some truly fabulous people and I'm so thrilled that I'm good friends with a lot of you now.

So many Wisconsin photographers have contacted me to welcome me and my business. I find that amazing. Thank you so very much for your kind emails. It's very refreshing to know that there are lots of cool and fabulous photographers in Wisconsin that would love to work with me. I look forward to meeting you all :)

Thank you to all of you who sent me emails, cards, and gifts wishing me well on my move to Wisconsin. You have no idea how much that means to me.

I love the symbolism in walking down these stairs from the Temple. It's like saying "we did it!" while they walk outside to the world as a married couple for the first time. The regular door they come out of isn't as beautiful so I always take these shots.

Jeanette is actually a friend of mine. We met through Brit, one of my past brides. I was elated that she chose me to photograph her wedding! She is such a gem and has a great bridal style going for her. Today was warm but very windy outside. The wind added a little drama to some photos but for the most part it was annoying! It dyed down a bit a little later and the sun broke through the clouds. We got some absolutely beautiful shots with the sunset. We took some pictures with Jeanette's bike for some fun. LOVE that bike!

One thing I'll miss most about Utah weddings is the bridals. Wisconsin brides don't very much like the idea of bridal sessions. I hope to change that.

I cannot wait for Jeanette's wedding in May! That means I get to come back here :)

Here is a link to all the songs(I like 1 and 3 the best). This is one of the coolest things I've found on the internet in a long time. What an amazing artist to be able to craft something coherent and awesome from all the junk that is on You Tube. Sweet.

Coffee Table Books

I haven't been hanging around the blogging world that much lately. We have been pretty busy packing some things away and "un-cluttering" our apartment before we move. I finally got one of my sample albums in the mail a week or so ago. It is beautiful!

I chose to get a sample of Rachel and Ryan's wedding that was back in September. I chose a 10x10 coffee table book with a black book case to protect it(all coffee table books come with these!).

They also come with a slip cover.

The pages are pretty thin and flimsy.

The book case that comes with the book can be either red or black. You can also choose a custom hot stamp for the case. Most couples either put their names or the wedding date.
